Long Beach

Often called the “Aquatic Capital of America,” Long Beach is a vibrant, coastal city that manages to feel like a collection of small towns. It is one of the most diverse cities in the U.S., offering a unique blend of urban energy, maritime history, and laid-back beach culture.

The Vibe

Long Beach is more relaxed and unpretentious than its neighbors, Los Angeles and Orange County. It’s known for being highly walkable and bike-friendly, with a community-oriented spirit reflected in its many local festivals, “First Fridays” art walks, and active neighborhood associations.

Key Districts & Neighborhoods

Because Long Beach is large, the “neighborhood” feel changes significantly depending on where you are:

  • Belmont Shore: The quintessential beach neighborhood. Its heart is 2nd Street, a bustling corridor of boutiques, bars, and outdoor cafes. It’s also home to Rosie’s Dog Beach.
  • Downtown (DTLB): The urban core where high-rise condos meet the waterfront. It features the Aquarium of the Pacific, the Queen Mary, and the East Village Arts District, known for its murals and indie shops.
  • Naples: A picturesque, upscale neighborhood built on three islands. It features Italian-style canals where you can take gondola rides, especially popular during the holidays for boat parades.
  • Bixby Knolls: Located further inland, this area has a “suburban-cool” vibe with tree-lined streets, historic ranch-style homes, and a thriving local business scene.
  • Retro Row (4th Street): A funky, creative stretch famous for vintage clothing stores, mid-century furniture shops, and the historic Art Theatre.

Quick Facts

  • Outdoor Life: Features over 5 miles of sandy beaches and a paved 3.1-mile beach path for biking and skating.
  • Accessibility: Highly central; it has its own regional airport (LGB) and is a 25–40 minute drive to both LA and OC.
  • Culture: Home to California State University, Long Beach (CSULB) and major events like the Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach.
