Seal Beach

While Long Beach is a major city, Seal Beach is its quieter, smaller neighbor just across the San Gabriel River. Located in Orange County, it is often called “Mayberry by the Sea” because of its quaint, nostalgic, and slow-paced atmosphere.

The Vibe

Seal Beach feels like a step back in time. It lacks the high-rises and intense traffic of Los Angeles, focusing instead on a classic “Old California” beach town feel. It is family-oriented and very popular with retirees, specifically due to the massive Leisure World community which makes up a significant portion of the city’s population.

Key Neighborhoods

  • Old Town: The soul of the city. This area is packed with charming beach cottages and “walk streets.” It centers around Main Street, which is famous for its independent toy stores, ice cream parlors, and local pubs.
  • The Hill: Located just above Pacific Coast Highway (PCH), this neighborhood offers larger single-family homes, many of which have views of the ocean or the Long Beach skyline.
  • Bridgeport: A small, newer enclave of Cape Cod-style homes and townhouses near the marina and within easy walking distance of the beach.
  • Surfside Colony: An exclusive, gated community located on a narrow strip of land between the ocean and the harbor. It’s one of the few places in SoCal where houses are built directly on the sand.
  • Leisure World: A world-renowned gated senior community (55+) that functions almost as a city-within-a-city, with its own amenities, golf courses, and transit.

Notable Landmarks

  • Seal Beach Pier: The second-longest wooden pier in California. It’s the perfect spot for sunset walks or watching surfers at the “river jetty.”
  • The Red Car Museum: A restored Pacific Electric trolley car sitting on Electric Avenue, serving as a tiny museum dedicated to the town’s transit history.
  • Seal Beach National Wildlife Refuge: A massive 1,000-acre marshland located within the Naval Weapons Station, home to endangered birds and sea turtles.
